Ace - The BBBFF by JaredofArt Ace - The BBBFF by JaredofArt
This originally started as me just wanting to draw Pony Pony Chopper in... whatever we wanna call this art style. However, I eventually got to humming the BBBFF song as I worked, and that turned to thoughts of One Piece. And that into thoughts of Ace. It sorta fits the scene perfectly, doesn't it? So I just decided to turn my idea into a quick little background. I still can't believe Ace was killed right after he was rescued. I never expected it at all, but I guess that just goes to show how unpredictable Oda can be. Oh. And Luffy's in his normal clothes since the yellow shirt didn't contrast very well; it was an artistic choice. At any rate: enjoy.

Yah. Ace's death was sad. :(
It had it's purpose to the story though, so its not for no reason. Luffy had to learn that he wasn't invincible and someone close to him had to have something happen to them to accomplish that.

Ace was the best one from a story perspective to axe. Despite having the same outcome, getting rid of one of the Straw hats would never happen. Ace was Luffy's brother, with the exception of posibly his friends, Ace had the biggest connection to Luffy. Oda never even really put him on page for very long either: he was more or less introduced, gave Luffy the paper, and then next you see of him is pretty much Impel Down. I doubt Oda expected him to get such a fan base and for people to get so attached to him given the limited screentime. Anyways, if SOMEONE close to Luffy didn't die, Luffy would have just kept on thinking that "as long as you just get back up and try again it'll work out it the end". It doesn't always. Luffy wouldn't have stopped to get stronger and would have had his ass handed to him in the New World.

That's just my two cents though, I liked Ace too.

When I rewatched that scene, even knowing it was coming I couldn't help but cry,the way luffy just breaks down....Not sure if any other show has caused me to have such a reaction...

I've cried cause of One Piece before, but not during that scene. I think I found it more... shocking... then any thing else. Oda never kills characters unless they're part of a flashback. Ace was the first. And right after he was saved too, it was pretty unexpected. :(

Yeah, really didn't see it coming,with...what was it two arcs dedicated to rescuing Ace? After all that build-up,to have that happen...I know someone who came very close to quitting the show then and there.

That being you, I assume? Just know that Ace's death wasn't pointless. Oda knows what he's doing. He chose the best person to kill based on screen time and how it would realistically effect luffy. Luffy needed a wake-up call, since it was obvious that he thought that he could handle any opponent.

I really like how there were two entire arcs building up to his "rescue" as it only helped to trick people further. What would be the point of doing all that work if Ace was just gonna die? That's the mental process most people would be thinking.

If Ace hadn't died, as far as I'm concerned, there would have been no timeskip.

Ah well. I'm sure we'll see him again in flashbacks or spiritually or something. :)
